Just a few days ago, San Francisco’s De Young Museum said goodbye to the David Hockney exhibit, a moving and comprehensive study of the renown British artist’s prolific career. From start to finish, the exhibit portrayed Hockney’s colorful, contemporary contributions to the art world. There was a chronological feel to it all; a sense of where Hockney began and how he’s evolved. Beginning with rather traditional forms of paintings on canvas and water colors, the exhibit seamlessly moved toward photoshop portraits, digital films that track the changing seasons and vivid landscapes Hockney created using the iPad.
As much as the exhibit featured Hockney’s evolution, it was also a insightful glimpse into evolving technologies of the 21st century art world. Perhaps my favorite pieces were the newest; never-before-exhibited charcoal drawing and paintings that Hockney completed in 2013.
